Information provided by Mr. Wilfredo C. Ibarra of Inland Aquatic Resources Division of PCAARRD.

In the Philippines there is no known commercial aqua feeds developed for the Big Head Carp fish species.

Big head carp are grown in freshwater areas such as in fishpen belt areas in Laguna de Bay.  They feed on available natural food like zooplankton, phytoplankton and detritus. They are filter feeder but also feed on algae.  The fish is harvested when they reach at least 1 kg within 3-4 months.  Bigger size fish,  around 2-3 kgs, feeding only on natural food available in the lake takes a longer culture period.

Big head carp can also be fed with commercial feeds available in the market such as feeds for milkfish and tilapia provided that they will be cultured in an enclosed system.
