Heherson M. Pagulayan was set from a career in electronics. After getting his degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Technological Institute of the Philippines in 2002, he received several job offers.

He decided instead to go back to his hometown in Ilagan, Isabela to manage the 4.5 hectare farm hi inherited from his parents. His initial foray was into corn farming, but this did not yield a gppd harvest  for various reasons. He also noted that income from mono-cropping (corn-corn) is usually low. He thus decided to engage in high-value commercial crops, particularly vegetables (from his surname PaGULAYAN).
He first set aside a small area in his farm where he tested various vegetable production technologies. With his limited knowledge, he was determined to learn more about the farming operation and technology intervention necessary to improve his productivity.

He sought the assistance of the agricultural extension workers of the local government unit and various seed companies. He attended training and seminars offered by the Department of Agriculture – Central Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center in San Felipe, Ilagan, Isabela. He also subscribed to agricultural magazines for technology updates on vegetable farming. He even offered his farm as a techno-demo site for a different varieties of vegetables sponsored by the East – West Seed Company and Allied Botanical Corp.

From this various surces Heherson learned about Nutrient Management, Integrated Pest Management, Irrigation, Mulching and other production-enhancing practices, which he integrated in his farm. He thus maintains a balanced farm, practicing a mix of NATURAL SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE & TRADITIONAL METHODS to produce high-quality, safe and affordable produce.

To successfully implement all the techniques he learned, he had to hire several farm hands. Today he employs 20 permanent laborers to manage his farm from land preparation to harvesting.

Through his efforts to maximize the utilization of his land, he was able to generate a return on investment of 301.27% for one year. For his vegetables, he was able to achieve a return on investment of 387.31%

His farm is now a show-window of assorted high-value crops, including ampalaya, eggplant, tomato and pepper. It also serves as a field school for integrated pest management (IPM) on vegetables conducted by the Department of Agriculture-Regional Crop Protection Center of Iligan, Isabela and a site for consolidated production technologies like nutrient management, Irrigation and mulching. It is also a training venue for farmers and students from state colleges and universities in the province taking on the job training (OJT) on vegetable production.

As a community leader, he speardheaded the organization of the San Antonio Vegetables Growers Association. This endeavor is regarded as one of the significant and remarkable achievements in Ilagan.

With these achievements, he was hailed as 2008 National Most Outstanding High Value Commercial Crops Farmer. As he keeps innovating. Heherson hopes to learn more and share his expertise to all farmers willing to engage in this kind of endeavor. By doing so he not only ensures his family’s well-being but also improves the lives of other farmers.

VISITING OTHER PEOPLES FARM is one way of getting new ideas and techniques in farming says- Zac Sarian of Manila bulletin.  Now, Agri – Aqua Network International (AANI) has been regularly undertaking. At the last farm tour that AANI conducted, some 40 farming enthusiasts visited to farms in Teresa, Rizal the Teresa Orchard and Nursery and the St. Martha farm of retired PNP Deputy Director General Jewel Canson and his wife Cecile.

The attendees came from as far as Mindanao like Onofre Grino, General manager of a big Agricultural Company based in mIndanao. Other came from as far north as the Ilocos. One of the practical farming techniques that the observed at the Teresa Orchard & Nursery is the total defoliation of custard apple tree, a member of the atis family. The defoliated tree bears fruit way ahead of the normal bearing season.

All the leaves of the four year old tree that originally came from Taiwan were removed with the scissors on December 10. Way before the defoliation, the tree was adequately fertilized with organic as well as complete inorganic fertilizer.
Also the participants saw for themselves how longkong is being propagated by inarching. This is a technique that is much faster in producing large planting materials than grafting.
They also observed the propagation of superior local and imported pummel by grafting and marcotting. The pummel varieties include the local Magallanes variety and red and white varieties from Vietnam and Thailand.
The tour participants also saw for themselves how fruit trees are grown in rubberized containers. These include imported makopa, sweet tamarind, imported mangoes, pummel, perante orange, and several others.(kya nagkaiidea sila mag lagay ng puno sa condo nila…)
And ofcourse!mawawala ba ang mga give aways??syempre! Participants get free planting materials of a sweet potato variety that is mainly used for the production of tender camote tops. An additional feature was the lecture by Cholo Raymundo of Allied Botanical Corporation. On basic of high value vegetable production.
To St, Martha farms. The tour proceeded to the St. Martha Farms which is just a kilometers away after lunch. (nga pla ang lunch?inihaw na hito at tilapia, lumpiyang sariwa, pickeled na ampalaya, fresh lettuce courtesy ng AANI Urban Farm sa Antipolo). There, Gen. Canson explained the potentials of this fresh water fish for the production of food fish. It is a very hardy species, he said and can be raised in fresh water ponds. wherever tilapia can be raised. The advantage is that it is much faster growing than tilapia. One fingerling can grow to one kilo in six months of culture. St. Martha farm is into Pangasius hatchery and grow-out operations. It has about 300 breeders which can produce millions of fingerlings each year. The farms initial production of fingerlings last year was sold out to buyers from as far away as Southern Mindanao, Iloilo and other places. The participants also enjoyed sampling grilled Pangasius right on the farm. A lot of them bought live Pangasius for cooking at only P70/ kilo!(syempre pahuhuli ba ako??)harvested from one of the ponds. A four hectare grow-out pond in Nueva Ecija is now producing Pangasius for the market as a joint venture project with 2 Rotary Friends.

Some says “ganito gagawin ko sa farm ko”, “eto pla tamang pag putol nu at pagpapdami?pede kop la paramihin ang isang puno ko!di lang pla ako kikita sa harvest, kikita din ako sa mga seedling kung ibebenta ko!so di ako malulugi kung off seasong mga tanim ko!

“A miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy.” That was how the fruits of sour sop or graviola (more popularly known here as guyabano or labana)

“what’s more, unlike chemotherapy, the compound extracted from the graviola tree selectively hunts down and kills only cancer cells,” the email said. “it does hot harm healthy cells!” In addition, it “effectively targets and kills malignant cells in 12 types of cancer, including colon, breast prospate, lung and pancreatic cancer.

     According to the email, a research has been conducted and showed that the extracts from guyabano can “attack cancer safely and effectively with an all natural therapy that does not cause extreme nausea, weight loss and hair loss.” It also “protects your immune system and avoids deadly infections: feels stronger and healthier through-out the course of the treatment; and boosts your energy and inproves your outlook on life.
     One wonders: Why are people not aware of this fact? The email explained: “it because some big corporation want to make back their money spent on years of research by trying to make a synthetic version of it for sale.”
      The U.S National Cancer Institute reportedly performed the first scientific research on the circulated email is true or not, the guyabano (scientific name: anona muricata) has been identified by the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) as one of the fruits that deserved attention. The book Underexploited Tropical Plants with Promising Economic Value described it as “a tropical fruit with potential for development as a processed industrial commodity.”
    Plants of the Philippines, published by the University of the Philippines in the 1970’s, mentioned guyabano just in passing. “A relative of atis” is all you can read about the fruit in the 550-page book.
     The heart shaped  guyabano fruit has a dark green, leathery and spike-like skin that measures from 8-12 inches long and can weigh up to 2.5 kilos. Ripe fruits are light yellow and soft. The creamy and delectable flesh contains from 60-100 black brown seeds that are indigestible and non-edible.

    Comparison of the flavor of Guyabano range from strawberry and pineapple mixed together to sour citrus flavor notes contrasting with an underlying creamy roundness of flavor reminiscent of coconut or banana.
    A native of tropical America, guyabano was introduce into the Philippines at an early date and is cultivated in  practically all parts of the archipelago. The plant grows in any kind of soil, but a fairly deep, friable soil of volcanic origin is conducive to growth and fruiting. It thrives very well from sea level.
    Guyabano is one of the healthiest fruits known to man. The flesh of the fruits consist of a white edible pulp that is high in carbohydrates (particularly fructose) and considerable amounts of vitamin c, vitamin b1, vit. B2, potassium and dietary fiber. Guyabano  is low in cholesterol, saturated fat and sodium. Not only is guyabano a good health food, it also tastes delicious.
    Aside from being eaten raw, the guyabano fruit is processed into candies, tarts, shakes, ice cream and sherbets and other beverages. An assortment of punch and cocktail drinks can be made by mixing the nectar with wine rum or cola drinks or buko (fresh coconut) juice and ice.

    In Indonesia, immature guyabano are cooked as vegetables or used in soup in Indonesia. In the northern part of Brazil, they are either roasted or fried.
    The fruit, seeds and leaves have a number of herbal medicinal uses in countries where the plant is common. The sap of the young leaves may be applied directly on pimples to induce suppuration. The sap is also considered parasitical. An alcoholic extract of the leaves, when distilled with steam, yields a small amount of essential oil. The portion of alcoholic extract which is soluble in water contains a large amount of potassium chloride together with dextrose tannins, amorphous products, and a small amount of an alkaloid substance which could not be crystallized. The leaves and roots also cure colic and convulsions,
    To reduce fever, a decoction of leaves can be taken internally. It has the same affect as when leaves are added to bathing water. In the Caribbean, it is believed that laying the leaves of the guyabano on a bed below a sleeping person with a fever will break the fever by the next morning.
    The crushed fresh leaves are also applied on skin eruptions for faster healing. A poultice of young guyabano leaves is applied on skin to alleviate rheumatism and other skin infections like eczema. Applied during the healing of wounds, this can result in less or no skin scars.
    The guyabano leaves are believed to have tranquilizing and sedative properties. In the Netherlands Antilles, the leaves are placed inside pillows or placed on top of the mattress to induce a good night’s sleep. Boiling the leaves and drinking may help induce sleep.
    Guyabano are also good in checking insect pests. Pulverizing the guyabano seeds and mixing it with soap and water can be used as an effective spray against caterpillars, armyworms and leafhoppers on plants. The petroleum ether and chloroform extracts of guyabano are toxic to black carpet beetle larvae. The seed oil kills head lice.
    The bark of the guyabano tree has been used in tanning. The bark fiber is strong but, since fruiting trees are not expendable, is resorted to only in necessity. Bark, as well as seeds and roots, has been used as fish poison.
    The wood is pale, aromatic, soft, light in weight and not durable. It has been used for ox yokes because it does not cause hair loss on the neck. Analyses of the wood in brazil show cellulose content of 65-76%, high enough to be a potential source of paper pulp.
    Here are some words of warning: Research carried out in the Caribbean has suggested a connection between consumption of gyabano and typical forms of parkinson’s disease due to the very high concetraton of annonacin. On the other hand, the seeds contain 45% of yellow non-drying oil which is an irritant poison, causing severe eye inflammation. “Guyabano seeds are toxic, and care must be taken to assure that all are removed before the pulp is processed” the NAS reminds.

Hello po! Um... I'm a newbie in farming. Mag tatanong lang po ako kung meron pang mga seminars sa mga susunod na buwan tungkol sa Natural Farming? Meron po bang seminars within Metor Manila or within Luzon? Sana po meron mag reply. Kailangan ko na po talaga kasi matuto dahil wala po ako masyadong alam eh at sa akin na binigay ang responsibilidad na hawakan ang farm namin.

You can visit any Bureau of Plant Industry station.  They have satellite stations in Los Banos, Davao, Baguio, Guimaras and La Granja.  Their main office is BPI Manila in San Andres Malate.  They have trainings on both organic and chemical based farming, composting, vermicomposting, urban gardening, indigenous vegetables, etc. You can also visit their station for some technical assistance.  We got our tech assistance from BPI Los Banos re vermicomposting.  We are now the largest pure vermi facility in the country.  They have better applied agriculturists that we frequently request them to visit our farm in Lipa City.  Since you are a newbie, you need to study a lot about soil, plants and environment. However, you can also visit your municipal agric. office for techno support.

good day po. gusto ko po sana humingi ng tulong. nakipag kontrata po ako kay ms. doris irog na isang farm consultant sa secret garden of doris. nagbayad po kami ng full na P310,000 para po sa clearing, tanim at improvement ng maliit naming farm. nag umpisa po kaming magkaproblema nang mahuli po naming may nagpuputol ng mga puno at binebenta daw ng tao ni ms. irog ng di namin alam. di na po nya naitanim at nadeliver ang 500 na papaya at mga gulay at di na din po nya naituro ang technology ng natural farming. nangako po sya last august na by the end of september 2010 ay maibabalik na ang full refund. hanggang ngayon po ay wala po ang refund at di na po sya sumasagot sa lahat ng form of communication. normally po daw ay P1m ang charge nya per hectare sa mga tanim at clearing and improvement pero dahil kaibigan nya ako, P310,000 na lang daw. nais ko po humingi ng tulong sa inyo na sana maibalik po ang pera na pinuhunan ko sa pagpafarming. kaya po ako lumapit sa kanya dahil sya ang may higit na kaalaman at ako po ay mag uumpisa pa lang sa pagpafarm. sana po matulungan nyo po ako. ayoko po ng gulo. gusto ko lang po maibalik yung pera dahil pang ayos na din po yun ng farm. mabuti na lang po at may mga taong tumulong sa akin after ng mga incidente. hangad ko na lang po ay mabawi ko ang pera na ipinangako nyang ibabalik since hindi po natupad ang nasa contract namin. salamat po at pasensya na sa abala. sana po malaman ko din po kung saan pwede makaatend ng seminar tungkol sa farming kasi po wala talaga ako alam tungkol dito at gusto ko po matuto.

Hi mad 1268,  we feel sorry for you.  Huwag kang mag-alala, marami ding katulad mo na nagtiwala sa mga taong magaling mag salita.  Dahil sa wala kang karanasan sa pagpafarming, dapat ay lumapit ka sa lokal na Municipal Agriculturist at hindi sa taong di mo alam ang background.  Dapat ay nakita mo muna ang credentials at background ng "consultant" mo, at ang mga dati nyang nagawa na na magpapatunay na may alam siya at kredibilidad.  Four years ago, sa kaso namin sa Kahariam Farms, ang pagkakamali namin ay ang pag hire ng farm manager na pinasweldo ng malaki subalit walang kinita sa loob ng isang taon kahit na kumpleto ng facilities ang farm tulad ng irrigation at greenhouses.  Dahil dito sinibak namin ang farm manager at kami na lang ang nagmanage.  Sa umpisa, mahirap dahil sa wala kaming experience at ang mga trabahador namin ay puro karpintero.  Dahil dito lumapit kami sa BPI Los Banos at tinulungan kami. hi kahariam. salamat po sa guidance nyo sa akin. masakit man po at mahirap tanggapin na naloko kami pero life has to go on. gusto ko bumangon at maging example na pagkatapos ng unos ay may pag asa pa ding makabangon kung gugustuhin nyo. sa ngayon po sa tulong ng mga kaibigan ay unti unti ko nang naaayos ang aking farm. i'll take your advice. ill go to BPI sa may quirino para makapagpaturo about farming. sana po ay maging successful ako kagaya ninyo. hangad ko lang po na maiayos itong farm ko para sa aking pamilya. salamat po ng marami at this is a lesson i will never forget. also, this will serve as a warning sa mga newbie na gaya ko. i trusted ms. doris irog owner of the secret garden of doris sa #8 sumulong highway antipolo pero hindi maganda naging resulta. right now im still trying to get in touch with her kahit na nagtatago na sya. she even uses the names like the ayalas, mr zac sarian, ms. armida siguion reyna and senator enrile. she was also featured sa jessica sojo dun sa banana na maraming bunga. sana ako na lang naloko nya at natakbuhan. sana di na sya makapanloko muli. again, salamat po sa inyong mga payo.

Hi Mad1268, I recommend BPI-Los Banos, they are  expose sa field work at para makita mo yung malawak nilang taniman.

hi kahariam meron po ba kayong seminar tungkol po sa pgtatanim ng ibat ibang flowers specially orchids . gusto ko po sanang matututo . wala pa po akong farm pero medyo naghahanap na kami ng lote ang plano po namin 2 to 3 hectares ang bibilhin ko ,marami na po akong nabasa tungkol sa pagtatanim .pagbababoy .manukan .at iba ibang prutas yan po ang plano kong ilagay sa farm para pang kunsumo namin .
.OFW po ako pa retiro na kaya gusto ko pong maging busy pag uwi ko dyan . gusto ko pong matuto ng pagtatanim ng flowers dahil malaki ang konsumo namin ng flowers .pag nagsisimba kasi kami marami kami kung bumili .pag holy week naman mas lalo kasi nilalagay namin sa altar pag pabasa namin .

vermi composting under greenhouse -  the KAHARIAM Realty and Farms, Inc. in Lipa City is producing vermicompost on 4,000 square meters of greenhouse that were used previously for growing leafy vegetables for the manila market. Three years ago, howeve, Manuel "nonong" Bagatsing who owns the farm realized that there is a better potential for producing vermicompost rather than growing vegetables commercially. that's because he can produce vermicompost with the African Nightcrawler earthworms at a minimal cost. that isbecause he gets the majority of the raw materials practicaly free, ecept for the cost of hauling. He uses 70 percent horse manure for feeding his earthworms which he gets from many friends who are into horse breeding right in lipa city. No less than 10 tons of horse manure are hauled everyday.
